2024 Monarch Butterfly Population Report - Brooklyn Street Field
Published on Oct 16, 2024
2024 was an average year for the Monarch population coming from out field milkweed. It was better that 2023, but not as good as the great years of 2021 and 22. We saw varying numbers in our 2 hectare field form the last days of May to mid-October. The peak number counted this year was 42 in mid-August.
The season started at the very end of May when the first Monarch arrived. In late June 3 more arrive and it was not until mid-July when more arrived to provide about 15 in the field. Once we had the four of late June they began laying eggs with the first Monarch butterfly emerging in the first week of August. The population of butterflies increased rapidly after that to a peak in mid-August. Some of these stayed in the field and layed more eggs so that there was a second population emerging in the first two weeks of September. After that peak the population of Monarchs in the field quickly declined during late September and only a few were seen in October.
